Shield your locks from harsh shower water
The water you wash your hair with may contain chlorine, minerals, even rust from old pipes,” says White. “All these things can enter the cuticle of your hair and alter your hair color.” To minimize discoloration, he suggests investing in an Aquasana Shower Filter ($55;aquasana.com; less expensive filters are available in hardware stores).

Shiny hair
First of all, your curls must be hydrated! Unfortunately curly hair is dry and porous by nature. Those porous areas of your strands need to be filled with moisturizing agents. Think of this (in simplistic terms) as spackling those areas with conditioner. There are several ways you can wrangle in come extra moisture:

What I needed to now years ago!!!
We talk serums, cleansers and oils like they’re our ABCs, but even beauty editors scrunch their face in confusion when an anti-aging-hybrid-eye cream-moisturizer comes across their desk.
The truth is, while exciting, the world of skin care is a little bit intimidating for beauty beginners. The vast amount of product is overwhelming, and don’t even get us started on the vernacular! It’s these reasons alone that many surrender to soap, and that makes us sad. Yes, there’s an encyclopedia of knowledge to learn from, but it doesn’t have to feel like school again.
Like kitchen chemists, perfecting your own skin care regimen is a true blend of art and science, and some spend years tailoring their ideal recipe. So whether you’re a seasoned skin pro or a total face novice, we decided it was time to reel back to the basics. We broke the domain of skin care down into a broad overview of seven steps—the what-you-should-know before you even begin. Granted, you probably won’t include everything in your personal system, and there’s so much more to learn. Keep these categories in mind when studying for your next skin shopping trip.

Hair EMERGENCY!
Polly Blitzer is the founder of Beauty Blitz, a beauty and lifestyle blog.
Got a hair emergency — but no beauty supplies? No problem. Here’s an arsenal of clever hair hacks to resuscitate your tresses as soon as they flatline.
Problem: No more hair elastics, but it’s totally a ponytail day.
Fast Fix: It’s time to talk trash. Grab a garbage bag tie, pull your hair back into a ponytail as you normally would, then bend the tie around the rope of hair twice and twist. Pronto — you’ve got a perfect pony. If you’ve got a pretty ribbon, wrap it around the closure to hide this hair hack.
Problem: The lingering fall humidity is wreaking havoc on your updo.
Fast Fix: Keep an extra toothbrush handy as an ad hoc hair tool. I’ve heard that celebrity hairstylists use a flat-bristle toothbrush to tame flyaways. Mist bristles with hairspray, then smooth over the hairline — the bristles will even get baby-fine frizz for a 100 percent sleek look.
Problem: Oh no! My diffuser just died.
Fast Fix: Time to get crafty in the kitchen. Use a mesh strainer to scoop up a lock of damp hair, and then blow dry on low from the underside of the strainer. You’ll still get a gorgeous blow-out. If you don’t have any hair clips on hand to hold back the rest of your hair, paperclips are a great alternative.
Problem: I forgot my comb … on the windiest day of the year.
Fast Fix: Tousled hair might be in right now, but nobody strives for a messy part. Use a chopstick tip or credit card corner to divide hair evenly, then rustle up a plastic fork to gently tease out tangles. Bonus hack: Your basic plastic fork is great for creating volume in an updo, too.
Problem: I have split ends but want to grow my hair out.
Fast Fix: Head straight for your stylist and ask for a “hair dusting.” This micro-trim removes a sliver of length — just enough to eliminate damaged ends — to give your ‘do a polished look without sacrificing much.
