Hair EMERGENCY!

Got a hair emergency — but no beauty supplies? No problem. Here’s an arsenal of clever hair hacks to resuscitate your tresses as soon as they flatline.
Problem: No more hair elastics, but it’s totally a ponytail day.
Fast Fix: It’s time to talk trash. Grab a garbage bag tie, pull your hair back into a ponytail as you normally would, then bend the tie around the rope of hair twice and twist. Pronto — you’ve got a perfect pony. If you’ve got a pretty ribbon, wrap it around the closure to hide this hair hack.
Problem: The lingering fall humidity is wreaking havoc on your updo.
Fast Fix: Keep an extra toothbrush handy as an ad hoc hair tool. I’ve heard that celebrity hairstylists use a flat-bristle toothbrush to tame flyaways. Mist bristles with hairspray, then smooth over the hairline — the bristles will even get baby-fine frizz for a 100 percent sleek look.
Problem: Oh no! My diffuser just died.
Fast Fix: Time to get crafty in the kitchen. Use a mesh strainer to scoop up a lock of damp hair, and then blow dry on low from the underside of the strainer. You’ll still get a gorgeous blow-out. If you don’t have any hair clips on hand to hold back the rest of your hair, paperclips are a great alternative.
Problem: I forgot my comb … on the windiest day of the year.
Fast Fix: Tousled hair might be in right now, but nobody strives for a messy part. Use a chopstick tip or credit card corner to divide hair evenly, then rustle up a plastic fork to gently tease out tangles. Bonus hack: Your basic plastic fork is great for creating volume in an updo, too.
Problem: I have split ends but want to grow my hair out.
Fast Fix: Head straight for your stylist and ask for a “hair dusting.” This micro-trim removes a sliver of length — just enough to eliminate damaged ends — to give your ‘do a polished look without sacrificing much.
